10 essential cleaning tools for families and pets

My Top 10 Cleaning Tools I Can’t Live Without

June 6, 2023 · In: Maintenance

As a mom of a teenager and four pets, a person who works from home with their partner, and an avid hobbyist, there are a lot of messes to clean up around my house. Here are my favorite cleaning tools I use on a regular basis.

I won’t lie, I love to try out new cleaning tools and gadgets. If it’s an Amazon Best Seller or a hot new viral TikTok sensation, I’ll buy it to test out. But over the years of trying new things, I always keep coming back to my same little group of cleaning tools. They have stood the test of time, are easy to use, and can tackle the fur tumbleweeds and gluten-free cracker crumbs that never seem to end. Here’s my Organized-ish Cleaning Dream Team.

My Favorite Vacuums

Notice how I said vacuums as a plural word. I have tried so many types of vacuums and nothing compares to the two I’m about to share. One is a stick vacuum and one is a robot vacuum, and I use them in tandem.

HART stick vac Lela Burris Organized-ish

This HART Tools Dual Brushroll Stick Vac is the best I have ever used, and it even beats out the pricey Dyson. The super soft dual roller picks up pet fur and cat litter like no other vacuum I’ve had, and it converts to a powerful hand vac to clean furniture and stairs. It has three power levels, a light in the front, and runs on a 20V battery. I keep one battery on the vacuum and one on a charger so I never have to wait for a dead battery to recharge.

Eufy pet-friendly robotic vacuum cleaner

The Eufy robot vacuum is my BFF. I have one upstairs and one downstairs, and they’re set on a schedule to run in a different room each day. We use our stick vac daily (the fur game is real in our house with three cats and a dog) but the robot vacuum gets underneath sofas and beds, so we don’t have to worry about dealing with that. We let our robot vacs (named Jarvis and Ultron) handle the deep cleaning while we just vacuum the high traffic areas with the stick vac.

My Favorite Mop

In an effort to use less disposable products, I recently ditched my Swiffer mop for this Oxo spray mop with washable mop pads. I spray floor cleaner straight from the bottle it comes in, mop it up, then use the spray bottle attached to the mop for a quick water rinse. My floors have never been cleaner, and this mop is lightweight and easy to use. I bought three additional mop pads to keep on hand for changing out as I go through different rooms of the house.

My Favorite Dusters

Just like the mop, I’ve been trying to get away from single-use cleaning products. I still have some Swiffer dusters to use up, but I find myself never using them in favor of microfiber cloths. Once I started dusting with these microfiber cloths, I realized how much more effective they are than any other duster on the market. You can dampen them with water, use with cleaners, or just swipe away dust with it completely dry. Just make sure you don’t use fabric softener or dryer sheets when you wash them. That leaves a film that makes them less effective.

My Favorite Upholstery Cleaner

This upholstery cleaner from HART Tools is my knight in shining armor as a mom. Between my son spilling tea on our couch and my dog tracking in mud (I hope it’s mud!) on the rugs, I love that I can bring out this cordless superhero and the mess is gone in minutes. I haven’t found a stain it can’t remove, and it’s more affordable than the Bissel one. You can also buy a corded version from this brand, and it’s under $100!

My Favorite Cleaning Gadget

I’m a sucker for cheap cleaning gadgets, especially if they solve a small but annoying problem. I ordered this window sill cleaning set on Amazon and did not expect it to work as well as it did. Sure, I could use a screwdriver to scrape out the gunk in the corners of the window sill and a cloth to wipe out the caked on dirt. But this cleaning tool set is so much more fun to use.

My Favorite Dryer Lint Cleaning Tool

If you’re still using that long skinny brush to clean your dryer vent, today is the day to place an Amazon order for this vacuum attachment and never touch that brush again. The brush doesn’t get out all the lint, and sometimes it pushes it down even further which increases your risk of a fire. This hose attaches right onto your vacuum and sucks out all the lint from deep down inside. This is a must-have if you use a clothes dryer.

My Favorite Bathroom Cleaning Tool

The worst part about cleaning a bathroom is being on your hands and knees bent over to clean the bathtub, or standing on your tippy toes to reach the top of the tiles in the shower. This extendable OXO bathroom cleaning brush has changed the game for my bathroom cleaning routine and I don’t have to bend down and break my back anymore. And bonus, the brush can slide off and become a handheld brush for the sink and counters, too.

My Favorite Air Purifier

You’re going to laugh, but remember when I said I have three cats and a dog? Well I’m actually allergic to all of them! I take Zyrtec every day and we vacuum daily too, but I think my allergies really settled down when we added this air purifier from Enviroklenz. My house smells better, feels better, and I don’t sneeze like a madwoman in the springtime with the windows open. It’s a little pricey, but it honestly is one of the best things we’ve gotten for our health.

My Favorite Heavy Duty Cleaning Tool

Ever wish you could scrub something really gross with a brush without having to move your arm at all? Ok, maybe you never even thought about that before, but this power scrubber from HART Tools takes all the elbow grease out of cleaning. I use it to clean windows and siding outside, 50 year old gunk on our garage floors, and my car tires and wheel wells. Plus it takes the same battery as the upholstery cleaner and the stick vac I mentioned earlier, so you can swap them back and forth and save money by not buying extras.

All you need is ten minutes. Don’t organize, don’t clean, don’t rearrange. Just take out the things you no longer want or need, along with anything that shouldn’t be there.
You’ll be shocked at how much stuff you pull out in ten minutes. 🤯
