Morning Coffee: Organizing Trends, Pepperoni Chips, and Holiday Seasonal Cleaning

August 13, 2022 · In: Saturday Morning Coffee Date

Happy Saturday! Grab a cup of coffee and snuggle up in your favorite seat of the house as we chat about all things home, life, and randomness.

Here on the blog, my social media channels, and soon on YouTube, we talk a lot about ways to organize your home for the long run. Not trends, not what’s getting saves on Pinterest, just real-life organization. Last night I asked in my Instagram Stories what organizing trend you want to go away and never come back, and the answers I got were pretty surprising.

Of course, there were hundreds of replies to that question stating they wanted the “rainbow order” to go away, and I expected that one since it’s so controversial. But I got answers like “decanting” and “labels” and “containers with lids” (that was a weird one).

Before you start getting offended because your entire pantry if full of labeled decanted containers with lids, I want to remind you of something. Organizing is not a one-size-fits-all. And it’s not a one-and-done either. What works for one person doesn’t work for another. And what works for you now may not be functional next year.

While I do agree that following “organizing trends” is a step in the wrong direction of getting your home and life Organized-ish, I think it’s okay to experiment with new things. Maybe you love the look of a row of acrylic containers. Or maybe you try out having a boutique-like look for your closet and hate it. The point is, you tried something new.

Our lifestyles are always evolving, and the things we own change frequently, too. So next time you see an organizing trend online, don’t feel self-conscious about giving it a try. As long as it doesn’t cost you much money.

Want to try organizing your books in rainbow order? That costs nothing and it’s easy to change back if you don’t like it. But don’t go out and buy $2000 in hyacinth baskets just to realize you hate the look (and the smell) of them. Definitely be adventurous with your organizing styles, but don’t spend money on things until you know what works for you.

Weigh in on this topic! Leave a comment below with the organizing trend you’re tired of seeing. You can also share a trend you actually like.

What’s On My Mind This Saturday Morning

Yesterday I made a bunch of snacks for Noah and his friend, then we cooked seared pork tenderloin and shallots on the stove. My house smells like my clothes did when I worked in a diner back in high school. Yuck. Do you have tips for getting food smells out of an entire house?

Speaking of making food, our favorite party snack just got easier. I had been making pepperoni chips in the microwave between paper towels for years and everyone loves them. But this time I popped them in my Ninja Foodi and they were done in 2 minutes. If you haven’t tried pepperoni chips yet, here’s your sign!

How do you feel about plastic cups? I picked up some 58 cent plastic tumblers from Walmart for drinking water outside, and I haven’t picked up a regular glass since. I don’t know why my brain is preferring these plastic cups over our nice drinkware….which do you prefer?

I made a funny video showing me ridiculously putting date stickers over printed dates in my planner and asked if I was crazy for doing this. Sticker-lovers united because the general consensus not only loved my extra-ness, but bought the same stickers for their own planners!

Shhh, don’t tell, but I’m already planning the holidays. My Holiday Planner is stuffed full of ideas, and my Halloween Planner is fully filled out. I know it’s only August, but I am ready!

One Last Thought

I think Fall Cleaning should be a thing. We have Spring Cleaning, and that just leads into summertime when we’re all spending less time in our homes. Fall Cleaning seems more important because we spend more time in our homes during the winter. I’ve had this holiday cleaning countdown calendar on my blog for a few years, but this fall I’m going to up the cleaning content so we can give our homes the cleaning love it needs before skeletons and flocked trees make their way out of storage. Are you with me?
