How to Organize Your Shed: Checklist and Storage Ideas for a Tidy, Functional Space
Declutter your shed with this easy-to-follow organization checklist. Get smart storage tips for totes, tools, lawn equipment, and more.
Let’s be real — sheds can go from “organized oasis” to “dumping ground for everything under the sun” in no time. I’ve definitely been guilty of shoving random stuff in mine and shutting the door before the whole pile could tumble out. But once I finally got smart about organizing my shed, it became one of the most functional spaces on our property. So today I’m spilling all my favorite shed organization tips to help you keep yours neat, pest-free, and easy to use.

Stackable Storage Totes: The Shed MVP
You cannot go wrong with stackable storage totes — they’re basically the workhorse of shed organization. But choosing the right kind makes all the difference:
- If your shed doesn’t have a lot of windows: Clear totes are totally fine! You’ll be able to see exactly what’s inside at a glance.
- If your shed does get a lot of sun: Opaque totes are your best friend. Go for a lighter color like gray rather than black. Dark totes soak up heat and can turn into mini ovens for your stuff (ask me how I know…).
And for anything you care about protecting from moisture or critters (think seasonal decorations, fabrics, even garden seed packets), spend a little extra on totes with gasket-sealed lids. Your future self will thank you.
Whether you’ve got built-in shelves, added your own, or you’re simply stacking totes along the walls, these containers are the key to keeping things tidy and easy to find.

Labels: The Secret Sauce of Organization
Now here’s the thing: labeling your bins is a must — but it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation.
If you’ve got clear bins, almost any label will do since they stick pretty well. But for opaque, textured bins? Labels tend to fall off, especially with temperature swings. I’ve found the simplest fix is grabbing a big ol’ Sharpie and writing directly on the bin. No fancy label maker required!
And when it comes to what you write? Be specific. “Garden supplies” on four different totes isn’t helpful when you’re elbow-deep searching for your frost blankets. Instead, label them clearly:
- Garden Hoses
- Garden Tools
- Seed Starting Trays
- Frost Blankets
If you want to level up, I’m obsessed with QR code labels. You scan them with an app, log the contents, and boom — you can see what’s inside from your phone without even cracking the lid. Plus, the search feature is a lifesaver for all those seasonal or rarely-used items.

Pegboards: The Ultimate Grab-and-Go Wall
Pegboards are hands-down one of the best ways to store the stuff you reach for all the time. I use mine for everything from hand tools and gardening gloves to little gadgets and random lawn tool attachments.
But here’s my golden rule: only store frequently used stuff here. Pegboard space is prime real estate, so don’t waste it on things you barely touch.
You can even add baskets and little shelves to hold odd-shaped or small items like rags, mower oil, gloves, and more. When you’re setting it up, place your go-to items at comfortable arm height and tuck the less-used stuff up high or down low.

Lawn Equipment & Larger Items: Plan Your Parking
Ever had to pull half the shed apart just to get to the weed eater? Been there, hated that.
Before you start stacking and stashing, take a minute to plan a parking layout for the big stuff like mowers, bikes, and power tools. I like to keep the riding mower in the middle so there’s enough room to walk around it and grab what I need from all sides.
And don’t forget your walls! Hanging things like weedeaters, pole saws, leaf blowers, and even bikes (if you don’t mind lifting them) will free up floor space and keep them safely out of the way. Just make sure your setup isn’t all about looks — if the system makes it hard to access something, it’ll just frustrate you later.

Modular & Mobile Storage: Flexibility is Key
If you’re short on space or like to change things around with the seasons (hello, garden tools in spring and fall decorations in October), modular and mobile storage is the way to go.
Rolling carts, potting benches, stackable shelving, and tool chests on wheels let you reconfigure your space as your needs shift — plus they make it easy to clean the floor and spot any sneaky pests hiding out.
And one of my absolute favorite hacks? Handled caddies! These are perfect for rounding up smaller, related items like cleaning supplies, pest control sprays, garden hand tools, or weedeater string. Just grab the whole caddy and take it with you when you’re working. So much easier than running back and forth.

Maintaining a Tidy Shed (Without Losing Your Mind)
A shed isn’t a junk drawer for your backyard — even though it’s so tempting to treat it like one. The key is to be intentional about what belongs in there, how it’s stored, and most importantly: putting things back when you’re done.
A few habits that make a big difference:
- Weekly tidy: If you use the shed often, take 10 minutes once a week to put things back in place.
- Monthly check-ins: If your shed’s more of a “once in a while” space, do a quick reset at the start of each month.
- Seasonal deep clean: Sweep the floor, clear cobwebs, wipe windows, and check your bins for any signs of pests or moisture damage.
- Yearly declutter: Once a year, go through everything and be honest about what you still use. If it hasn’t seen daylight in a year? It’s probably time to let it go.
A little bit of organization goes a long way when it comes to your shed. Whether you’re wrangling tools, garden gear, holiday decorations, or all of the above — a smart setup will save you time, money, and a whole lot of frustration.
Now go give your shed the glow-up it deserves!
