Here’s my step by step guide for laundering your bed sheets to make them smell fresher and feel softer than ever before. Sponsored by EnviroKlenz.
There is nothing better than climbing into bed at night with a fresh, clean set of sheets. If I ever had unlimited income, I’d hire someone to change my sheets every day so I could have that feeling nightly. I don’t know what it is, but everyone I know seems to feel the same way. But lately my bed sheets have been feeling a little worn down and dingy.
They don’t look, feel, or smell bad, but they definitely aren’t giving off the “I just got new sheets” vibe. I could either replace them or try something new to up my laundry game. I decided to try to salvage them by experimenting with a few cleaning products, and I found the magic combination to bring my bed sheets back to life. Here’s the secret to fresh, soft, clean sheets after every wash.

What You Need To Refresh Your Bed Sheets
- Machine Basin Wash Solution or Distilled Vinegar
- Unscented Laundry Detergent
- EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer
- Dryer Balls (four or five)

Prepping Bed Sheets For Washing
You probably think you just need to throw your sheets in the washing machine just like you do your clothes, but there’s actually a method to laundering bedding that takes a few extra steps. A lot of sweating happens on your sheets at night, and your body sheds dead skin cells while you’re sleeping, too. Where does all that go? On your sheets. Gross, right?

Before washing your bed linens, it’s a good idea to run a quick cleaning cycle in your washing machine to make sure the tub is sparkling inside and there aren’t lingering odors left behind from washing clothing. You can run a vinegar cycle or use a special basin cleaner and very hot water. If your machine doesn’t have a self-cleaning cycle, just run a regular cycle minus the spin.

While the clean cycle is running, take the sheets off the bed and carry them outside. Give them a really good shake. Shake them like you’re lost at sea and are trying to flag down the first helicopter you’ve seen in days. Your goal is to shake off any pet fur, hair dander, or microscopic skin cells. When these get wet, the oils can soak into your bedding and leave your sheets smelling “unfresh” even after they’ve been washed.

How To Wash Bed Sheets Properly
Now that your sheets are prepped and your washing machine is nice and clean, you can start laundering your bedding. I suggest using a clear-colored laundry detergent that is fragrance-free and with as few chemicals as you can get away with.

Add half the amount of laundry detergent you normally use to the detergent compartment of your machine (or right in the basin if you have a top-loader). Next, add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer. Don’t add any fabric softener or scent beads. Your goal is to wash the bedding completely fragrance-less so no perfume oils block the fibers from getting clean.

Run the cycle with warm water and add an additional rinse and spin cycle. When the wash cycle is over, transfer to the dryer and add four to five wool dryer balls (or wool alternatives if you’re sensitive to that fabric) and run the dry cycle on low heat.

The dryer balls fluff up your sheets and “wake up” the fibers without weighing them down with dryer sheet oils. Halfway through the dry cycle, remove and reposition the sheets so they don’t end up in a big ball with a wet, soggy center.

When the sheets are dry, put them on the bed or fold them as soon as possible to avoid wrinkles. Wrinkles don’t hurt your bedding, but that euphoric feeling of getting in bed with fresh, clean sheets is ruined if the sheets look like there was a wrestling match held on top of them earlier in the day.

Why EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer?
I’ve been a big fan of EnviroKlenz products for years. As someone with pretty severe allergies, most cleaning products bother my skin and leave me sneezing constantly. EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer is completely fragrance-free with no perfumes or compound chemicals.

It is made with only five ingredients, and water is one of them. But don’t let the short ingredient list fool you, the combo is a dream team at removing odors from laundry. The EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer can even remove perfume smells from thrift store clothing. (I read that on their website and tried it myself…it’s true!)

New EnviroKlenz Recyclable Packaging
What I like most about this product specifically is the packaging. I hate big plastic jugs of laundry detergent. They’re awkward to use and are difficult to throw away. EnviroKlenz recently swapped their plastic jug for a recyclable cardboard box to cut down on waste.

When you’ve used up all the Laundry Enhancer, you just rinse the plastic bag inside, break down the box, and you can recycle both of them with a lot less surface area in your trash cans. This packaging change results in an 8x lower carbon footprint than plastic jugs and an 86% reduction in plastic waste.

As with any laundry product, conduct an allergy test on a small fabric like a spare pillow case or sock to ensure there are no reactions before laundering clothing or bedding. Organized-ish LLC and EnviroKlenz are not responsible for chemical reactions, so please don’t skip the test phase before jumping into a new product.

I switched to laundry sheets over a year ago and never looked back. No more paying for mostly water and hauling big expensive jugs around.
