Learn how to implement four intentions in 2024 to live a simpler lifestyle with mindful routines and sustainable shopping.
Every January, I sit down over a cup of hot tea and a flickering candle to put my intentions for the year on paper. It’s a deeply personal ritual and I won’t get into the details, but I do want to share with you the big goals, intentions, and limits I have planned for 2024.
When I sat on my couch watching the candle’s flame jump around, the word simplicity came to my mind and flashed over and over like a billboard sign in Vegas. Simplicity in my home, simplicity in my routines, simplicity in my belongings, and simplicity in my business. So I started writing down all the things that pull me away from simplicity and how I can re-focus to ditch those unnecessary things that tug away at my attention.
Once I was able to realize what was preventing simplicity in my life, I was able to define intentions to take back that control. So here are my four intentions for 2024, or New Year’s Resolutions if you want to call them that, and how I plan to implement them.
Lately, I have been feeling overwhelmed by all the extra “stuff” in my home. While I have hosted the Organized-ish Purge-A-Thon three times in the last two years, I still find myself picking up items and thinking “I don’t need this.”
My first intention for 2024 is ruthless decluttering. No “what if I need this later” and no “I have a space to store this so it’s not really clutter.” If an item is in my house and I’m not using it, I’m labeling it as unnecessary and I’m getting it out. I’d rather have a completely empty drawer than a drawer with stuff I never touch.
Last year, I really focused on creating a list of things I wouldn’t buy anymore, and I’m happy to say that I stuck with it all year. Now that I’ve had a whole year of following those “rules” I created for myself, I’m ready to loosen up the reins and trust myself. I don’t think I need rules to prevent me from impulse buys anymore because I feel like I have reframed my shopping habits.
I am going into 2024 with the confidence that I know whether something is going to be a good purchase or not. I know if I need that new gadget or that furniture swap. I know if I’ll actually use that new kitchen appliance (Spoiler, I will not. I use my air fryer 5+ days a week and nothing can replace it). And I know what I’ve been donating during my ruthless purging so I won’t rebuy them again.
More Sustainable Products
One thing about having a large following on social media is that people are quick to call you out for everything. Not in a mean way (well, usually) but in what they conceive to be a helpful way. When I started getting comments after comments about the cleaning supplies, beauty products, and single-use items I owned, it really caused me to evaluate and research what was coming into my house.
In 2024, I intend to put more emphasis on plant-based natural cleaning products, non-toxic healthcare products, sustainable containers, and low-waste packaging than I ever have before. This mindset has always been something I’ve been aware of, but I went down the rabbit hole of research and realized I need to make big changes.
This journey will likely be behind the scenes of my usual content because I am not an expert on sustainability, but you’re probably start to see shifts in the products I own and things I use. I will never preach this lifestyle online because I believe it’s a personal choice and you shouldn’t feel judged for the products you use. But you will see drastic changes in my own personal shopping choices.
Unfollowing Interior Design Accounts On Instagram
Oooossh, this is going to be a hard one. I love interior design and I love to look at pretty rooms. But when I see a really great room design it makes me want to redecorate. I end up replacing a perfectly functional piece of furniture or decor in my house with something different just to get that look from the influencer’s photo.
We have been renovating our house for the last four years and aside from the bathrooms and the landscaping, we are done. And to tell you the truth, I’m tired of changing things. My goal of 2024 is simplicity, both in my home and my lifestyle. And that requires me to learn to be still and ok with the way things are. So unfollowing the design accounts that make me want to buy things I don’t need or redecorate my already-decorated accounts will take away that temptation.
What Are Your 2024 Intentions?
I’d love to know what your intentions for this year are, too! Leave them in the comments to hold yourself accountable and inspire others. And if you have any suggestions and advice on good clean beauty and cleaning products, please share as well. I’m new to this lifestyle and would love tips from those of you who have been focusing on non-toxic products for a long time.
